Two sailors in a dinghy

What it takes to sail in the Olympics

As a proud partner and apparel sponsor of multiple Olympic sailors, we are excited to talk with Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló about what it takes to compete in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Sailing has been at the core of Helly Hansen since our inception in 1877. The first products sought to protect Norwegian mariners from challenging Nordic weather. Since then, technical improvements have come through relentless innovation and application of the latest technologies.

Our involvement in high-performance sailing has been notably distinguished, and our sailing gear had its Olympic debut at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. Since then, sailors outfitted with Helly Hansen apparel have conquered everything from dinghy regattas to ocean races in every corner of the globe.

Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló represent Spain in the 49erFX class in Paris this summer.

How do you mentally prepare?

Enjoying pressure is one of the most important challenges for athletes, especially when it comes to the Olympic Games. Working with a sports psychologist allows you to acquire skills and tools to handle all kinds of situations and emotions, including preparation for the most important event: the Olympic Games.

How do you physically prepare?

There is no time to lose; the countdown has begun. Good physical preparation, complementary to the hours on water, allows us to maintain an adequate physical condition to face the days of competition: workouts, cycling, and running, among other activities, allow us to find a good balance between training and having fun.

As a team, how do you approach training together?

We must set common goals that allow us to improve and reach our purpose. In our sport, we need to work as a team to be able to sail fast towards the finish line.

How do you, as a team, overcome obstacles or challenges?

Adversity is best faced together as a united front. The key to overcoming challenges is to lean on your teammates, who will support you in getting back on your feet and continuing the journey. Trust in the team and the power of collective effort is the most potent tool for success.

What does this summer's games mean to you?

Representing your country at the world's biggest sporting stadium is a unique opportunity. It's an unrepeatable feeling, and I feel pride.

What have you learned from past Olympic experiences that might help others participating for the first time?

Be realistic with your goals and enjoy the moment.

What is the key to success in the Olympics?

Enjoy the pressure.

What is the most challenging part of the games?

Everything, every day, is a challenge for the athletes.

What drives you to keep competing in the games?

Passion.

How do you mentally prepare?

We have worked with a sports mental coach since the beginning, helping us deal with all the challenges we face during our journey to Paris 2024, like pressure management, frustration, expectations management, and self-confidence. I would say that one of the most important things for being mentally prepared is approaching the training the same way you would do in a competition.

How do you physically prepare?

Being in good shape is one of the most important qualities for an athlete. I go to the gym six days a week, three days for weightlifting and three days for cardio (cycling or rowing).

How do you approach training together?

As a team, we strive to foster a strong sense of camaraderie. Sharing responsibilities and placing full trust in each other's abilities to achieve them is one of the most important things. We firmly believe that personal growth translates into team growth, and we consistently encourage each other to improve in our respective roles.

What does this summer's games mean to you?

Despite having already competed in the Olympics, it's always a dream to be back there. The atmosphere at the Olympic Games is something special.

What have you learned from past Olympic experiences that has better prepared you for this summer?

I've learned that the most important thing is to finish with the feeling that you gave it your best. And the importance of living in the moment and enjoying the process.

What is the key to success in the Olympics?

Haha, I'm still trying to figure it out! I think there isn't just one key. It's the combination of many factors, but good preparation and hard work are definitely among them.

What is the most challenging part of the games?

Managing the expectations of other people and the pressure of the competition.

What drives you to keep competing in the games?

The joy of the process and the feeling of competing at a high level.
