Awakening to Adventure

First Hour Skiing and Safety in the Norwegian Mountains

In the hushed, twilight hours of the morning, as the first light of dawn begins to illuminate the snow-capped peaks, a sense of anticipation awakens in the heart of every winter adventurer.

It’s in these early moments, under the soft glow of the rising sun, that the magic of the winter season truly unfolds. For us this isn’t just the start of another winter; it’s the beginning of new possibilities – the pursuit of the winter season’s first ski tracks and capturing the magic first hour light in the mountains.

The Anticipated Journey back to the Mountains

There’s something profoundly special about being among the first to greet the day in the Mountains. This time we are heading for Ørsta in the Møre and Romsdal Alps. As the morning light cascades over the pristine landscape, each ray of sunshine brings the world into sharper focus, revealing a winter wonderland ready for exploration. It's a time when the rest of the world still slumbers, leaving the mountains in a state of peaceful serenity, reserved only for those early risers and nature enthusiasts.

As the sun rises higher, painting the sky in hues of orange, we embark on our journey through the snow-covered terrain of Ørsta. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or beginning to explore the joys of winter sports, there’s something magical about these early hours – a time when nature reveals its most intimate beauty, inviting us to partake in the silence of the early winter morning.

The transition from the urban landscape in Trondheim, to the serene beauty of Ørsta is a gradual unveiling of nature's winter masterpiece. With every passing kilometer, the city's noise fades into the background, replaced by the tranquil silence of the snow-covered wilderness. The air gets crisper, the sky a deeper shade of winter blue. There's a unique thrill that comes with the first winter adventure of the season, a mix of nostalgia and new expectations. As adventure photographers the early morning light and snow covered peaks is a unique “canvas” just waiting to be captured.

Here, among the peaks, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the outdoors gives a sense of coming home.

Study the terrain and look for avalanches that has been triggered naturally in the area. This is a clear sign of avalanche risk.

Tips for Venturing Into the Winter Mountains

Embarking on a skiing adventure in the mountains requires a mindful approach. Here are some tips to make your early season skiing adventure a safe one:

Plan the route

  • The Early season snow pack can be unpredictable. Stay informed about the latest weather and avalanche reports. Taking a look at the weather history for the last weeks can give you some insights into what type of snow pack you can expect on your trip. For avalanche info in Norway use www.varsom.no for info on the latest avalanche forecasts.

  • If you´re not experienced in the winter mountains or are unfamiliar with the area where you are planning your adventure, stay clear of slopes with an incline of more than 30 degrees. Also study the map for steep terrain above your planned route.

If you’re uncertain about the terrain, choose a route to the top clear of steep slopes.

Understand the conditions

  • Most avalanches that affect skiers are so-called “slab”-avalanches. They primarily release on snow-heavy leeward slopes with an incline of more than 30. They release either spontaneously or due to external influences such as a skier.

  • Heavy snowfall increases the likelihood of avalanches. The fresh snow can add additional load to weaker layers deeper in the snowpack.

Gear Up Appropriately

  • The Right Equipment: Be sure to bring a snow shovel, avalanche beacon and avalanche pole. Be sure you know how to use your equipment before you are out there on the slopes.

  • Dress in Layers: The weather can fluctuate significantly. Wear moisturewicking base layers, insulation layers for warmth, and a waterproof outer layer. Remember, layering allows you to adjust your clothing to suit the temperature and your activity level.

  • Stay Visible: Bring a small packable reflective vest so that emergency services can easily locate you.

Safety First

  • Avalanche Awareness: Early snowpack can be unstable. If you’re venturing into the backcountry, be sure to have avalanche safety gear and know how to use it. A basic course in avalanche safety is highly recommended.

  • Stay Visible: Bring a small packable reflective vest so that emergency services can easily locate you.

  • Map/Compass or Phone/power bank for navigation.

Respect the Terrain

  • Fresh avalanches triggered naturally are always a sign of avalanche danger.

  • Rumbling sounds reveal that there are one or more weak layers in the snowpack that can collapse under stress.
