Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) isn't just a regatta—it's an immersive celebration of sailing's rich heritage and the largest sailing event in the world in the heart of Kiel, Germany.
This annual festival is a focal point for the global sailing community, combining competitive spirit with a celebratory atmosphere. This year is set to be no different, with the widely anticipated event taking place during the long days of German summer, from June 22—30, 2024. Expect 2,000 events on the program, some three million visitors, and a warm Helly Hansen welcome for some exciting regattas.
First launched domestically in 1882, Kiel Week - Kieler Woche in German - has gone on to cement its place in history as one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing events globally. On-board tours and the famous “Windjammerparade”, a monumental tall ship sailing parade, have highlighted the city's waterfront since 1972, adding to the unforgettable experience. This year, as we dive into this grand regatta, we are proud to spotlight Helly Hansen athletes and our role as sponsors of the event that draws over 4500 participants from over 60 countries.
One of these participants (and Helly Hansen ambassador) is Spanish sailor Támara Echegoyen, who still remembers the first time she participated in the 6-meter Match Race Class: “I was impressed by the atmosphere and the magnitude of the event. The familiarity and warmth with which the sailors are treated, and the mix between the different classes. I will always remember leaving the competition and having the opportunity to cross in the same boat park with many sailors who were role models for me.”
Kieler Woche attracts Olympic medalists, world champions, and sailing enthusiasts, alike, to compete in a diverse array of classes, showcasing the very best international sailing talent and making it a melting pot of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. HH ambassadors like Támara contribute significantly to this talent pool and the international appeal of the event. These skilled HH sailors from around the globe, such as Sanni Beucke and Robert Stanjek who have competed in the past, add a personal dimension to Kieler Woche, offering first-hand insight into the world of competitive sailing and bridging the gap between the audience and athletes. Their participation and insights, through Q&A sessions and personal stories, embody our commitment to sailing and showcase the human element behind the competition.
As you navigate the thrilling array of Kieler Woche’s nautical challenges, certain races and regattas stand out as absolute must-attends. There are no fewer than eight different courses and four offshore sailing competitions. These events not only showcase the skill and speed of the sailors but also the camaraderie and competitive spirit characterising the sport.
Whether you're an avid racer or a spectator, these events are the heart of Kieler Woche, offering an experience that encapsulates the spirit of competitive sailing. Keep a keen eye on this year’s schedule to ensure you don’t miss anything!
As a sponsor of the Kieler Woche regattas, our presence embodies our commitment to excellence and innovation in sailing, with our pop-up shop at the Olympic Centre at Schilksee as a focal point of the Sponsor Mile. Our history is inextricably tied to the sea – we were one of the first to develop waterproof sailing clothes – and we continue to innovate to support sailors. Kieler Woche is the perfect platform to showcase our heritage, our latest sailing gear, and our dedication to professional sailors and sailing enthusiasts around the world.
Although at its heart Kieler Woche celebrates the timeless appeal of the ocean, it goes beyond just sailing; it’s also one of Germany’s biggest summer “Volksfeste”. The event comes alive with live music, art exhibitions, and food. Each year is traditionally associated with a specific graphic artist, and 2024 is no different – look out for the minimalist yet clearly nautical poster by Jianping He from Berlin, winner of this year’s tender. Culture and sailing intertwine, creating a vibrant atmosphere that appeals to all. There are live performances to suit all tastes, from the Electric Feel Takeover, to Handel’s Budenbrook opera, to the musical West Side Story.
Kieler Woche stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of sailing, a sport that continues to inspire and unite. The event not only celebrates the rich heritage of sailing but also looks forward to a future where the sea remains a source of challenge, adventure, and beauty, and we’re excited to contribute to this bright future. Together, we chart a course towards celebrating not just the sport, but the spirit of sailing that captivates hearts and minds around the globe.
