Ever wondered how much you can fit in your backpack? Whether you're planning a day hike or a multi-day expedition, choosing the right size backpack is crucial.
Darren Lum, Design Manager and Lead Designer for bags and backpacks at Helly Hansen, walks us through the world of backpack capacity to help you understand different sizes and types of backpacks and their capacities.
These backpacks are designed for day hikes, but they’re also suitable for short outings and plane travel. With a capacity of 20 to 30 liters, day packs are lightweight yet spacious enough to carry essentials like water, food, extra clothing, and personal items. They strike a balance between convenience and capacity, making them a must-have for any hiker.
Also known as weekend packs or weekenders, overnight backpacks are designed for overnight trips or weekend hikes and have more room for your belongings. With a capacity ranging from 30 to 50 liters, these packs offer additional features like sleeping bag compartments and external attachment points for extra gear. They are your go-to choice for a bit more space without adding unnecessary bulk.
Planning a longer hike? Multi-day backpacks are designed for trips lasting three or more days. With capacities of 50 liters or more, these packs can carry all your essential gear, including clothing, food, cooking equipment, a sleeping bag, and a tent. They are robust and spacious, ensuring you can fit everything you need for an extended adventure. This might also be an option for a backpacking trip or if you're going traveling.
For the serious adventurer, expedition backpacks are heavy-duty packs designed for mountaineering or extended expeditions. With backpack volumes of 70 liters or more, these backpacks are built to carry heavy loads and often feature specialized compartments for ropes, ice axes, crampons, and other mountaineering equipment. They are engineered for durability and maximum capacity.
Hydration packs come with a built-in hydration system, typically a bladder and drinking tube, allowing you to drink water on the go without stopping to retrieve a bottle. These packs are ideal for keeping hydrated during your hike, ensuring you have a constant water supply at your fingertips.
Frameless backpacks do not have a rigid internal frame, making them lighter and more flexible. These are suitable for shorter hikes or when carrying lighter loads. Their flexibility and lightweight nature make them a great option for those who prioritize comfort and ease of movement.
Internal frame backpacks are equipped with a built-in internal frame made from lightweight materials like aluminum. The frame helps distribute weight evenly and provides stability, making these backpacks suitable for longer hikes and carrying heavier loads. They offer the perfect balance of support and capacity.
Selecting the right backpack depends on your specific needs, the duration of your hikes, and the amount of gear you need to carry. Consider these factors carefully to ensure your backpack meets your requirements and enhances your adventure experience.
